Edward Bodman (1729 – 1783) and Mary Perry ( ? – 1766)
Edward Bodman was born about 1729. Like his father he was a shoemaker / cordwainer. He married Mary Perry of Compton Bassett on 26th February at Calne.
Edward and Sarah’s first child was:
Sarah Bodman baptised 9th January and buried on the 16th January 1765 at Calne.
Sadly Mary Bodman, Edward’s wife died the following ywaer and was buried at Calne on 7th March 1766.
Edward remarried Sarah Woodward of Cherhill on 19th February 1769 at Calne.
They had the following children, all daughters, and all baptised at Calne:
Mary Bodman born 6th April and baptised 9th April and buried 25 July 1787
Catherine Bodman born 13th September baptised 13th October 1771
Sarah Bodman born 24th March and baptised 4th June 1773
Elizabeth Bodman born 25th October and baptised 23rsd December 1775.
In 1767 Edward took on a shoemaking apprentice William Bewley.
In 1774 property was released to him on the death of his father. Release to Edward Bodman, shoemaker, and William Oriel, collarmaker, of property including cottages at Cold Harbour in Stock tithing and eight cottages at Rotten Row (formerly Bull Hill). Includes mention of the children of William Butten, mason and bricklayer of Calne who died in 1763.
IN 1778 he paid 6d rate on his property on Church Street, Calne.
He died in 1783 and was buried at Calne on 4th May 1783.
He left a Will mentioning all his four daughters and appointing wife as executrix. It also mentions his two brothers Thomas and John.

In the name of God Amen, Edward Bodman of Calne in the county of Wilts, Cordwainer
being weak in body but of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding for which Holy God do this fourteenth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty three make and publish my last Will and Testament in manner following
Whereas am entitled to a copyhold Estate in the Manor of Cherhill in the said County of Wilts for the term of my life and the lives of my dear and loving wife Sarah Bodman and my daughter Mary Bodman which on the death of my said dear and loving wife will come to my said daughter Mary as the next taker.
Now it is my Will and desire that my said dear wife do and shall permit and suffer my said daughter Mary to live and reside with her ‘till she shall attain the age of seventeen years or until such time as she my said daughter shall be able to go out to service or maintain herself and it is my ernest desire that my said wife do and shall immediately after my decease drop the trade which I now use and not attempt to carry out the same.
Item I give and bequeath to my loving brother Thomas Bodman my best coat and breeches and to my loving brother John Bodman all my old wearing apparel (except linen) of what kind so ever the same be.
Also I give and devise to Thomas Greenwood of Calne aforesaid Clerk and Christopher Allsup of Calne aforesaid, surgeon all that my freehold messuage or tenement wherein I now dwell with the backside and garden thereunto adjoining and belonging situate and being in Calne aforesaid in a street there called Church Street together also with a Beast Leaze in the Commons called the Marsh and Alders and a Pew in the Body of Calne Church to the same also belonging and which I sometime since purchase of Mrs Elizabeth Forman and Mr Robert Forman her son me
To hold to them the said Thomas Greenwood and Christopher Allsup their heirs and assigns upon such trusts and to and for such uses intents and purposes as are herein after mentioned expressed declared and written of and concerning the same (that is to say) Upon Trust that they, the said Thomas Greenwood and Christopher Allsup or the survivor of them or their heirs or assigns of such survivor shall and do as soon as conveniently after my decease or at such other time as they in their discretion shall think fit absolutely sell dispose of the said messuage or tenement garden Beast Leaze and premises to the best purchase or purchasers and for the best price or prices which they can reasonably get for the same and the receipt or receipts of the said Thomas Greenwood and Christopher Allsup or of their survivor of them or the heirs of such survivor to be sufficient releases discharges to such purchase or purchases for his or their purchase money for so much thereof for which such receipt or receipts shall be given without such purchaser or purchasers being obliged to see to the application or be answerable for the misapplication of the said purchase money or any part thereof And Upon this further Trust that the said Thomas Greenwood and Christopher Allsup or of their survivor of them or the heirs of such survivor do and shall after such sale pay apply and dispose of the moneys arising therefrom for and towards the maintenance, education and breeding up of my three youngest daughters Catherine Bodman, Sarah Bodman and Elizabeth Bodman in such manner as they in their discretion shall think most fit ‘till the youngest of them my said daughters shall attain the age of twenty one years and after she my said youngest daughter shall have attained her said age of twenty one years then Upon Trust that they the said Thomas Greenwood and Christopher Allsup or of their survivor of them or the heirs of such survivors do and shall pay the residue of the monies arising by such sale as aforesaid (if any shall happen to be left) unto and amongst my said daughters Catherine Bodman, Sarah Bodman and Elizabeth Bodman share and share alike.
Item I give and bequeath to my dear and loving wife Sarah Bodman the use of all and singular my household goods and implements of household for and during her natural life is she shall so long continue a widow and unmarried and from and immediately after the marriage or decease of my said wife I give and bequeath the same to my said daughters Catherine Bodman, Sarah Bodman and Elizabeth Bodman to be equally divided between them share and share alike
And all the rest residue and remainder of my monies securities for money, stock in trade personal estate and effects whatsoever, where so ever and of what nature kind or quality so ever after payment of my funeral expenses debts and legacies I give and bequeath the same to my said dear and loving wife Sarah Bodman And I do hereby now nominate constitute and appoint my said wife Sarah Bodman whole and sole Executrix of this my said Will and hereby revoking all former of other Will and Wills by me made I do declare this to be my last Will and Testament Provided never the less and I do hereby declare my will to be that the said Thomas Greenwood and Christopher Allsup or either of them their or either of their heirs executors or adminstrators shall not be charged or chargeable with or accountable or answerable for any more monies or things than they shall repectively actually receive or shall come to their hands respectively by virtue of the Trust aforesaid nor with or for any loss or losses which may happen of the said trust monies or any part thereof so as the same happen without their wilful default nor any or either of them for the acts, receipts or defaults of the other or others of them but each of them for his own separate act receipts or default only and that all costs damages and expenses of my said trustees respectively shall be retained paid and so satisfied to them each of them out of the said Trust Estate anything herein contained to the contrary not withstanding In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year first above written
