John Bodman (1716 – 1757)

John Bodman (1716 – 1757) and Mary (1711 -1759)


John Bodman was born about 1716. He was a linen draper. We know his wife was named Mary. It is possible that she is the Mary Rendol who married a John Bodman at Westbury on 20th April 1731.

John and Mary had the following known children all baptised at Warminster:
Anne Bodman baptised 28th May 1739
Timothy Bodman baptised 27th November 1739
Mary Bodman baptised 20th April 1741
John Bodman baptised 5th February 1744
Thomas Bodman baptised September 1747 and buried 8th February 1747/8, aged for months

In 1741 he was joint Executor of his brother William’s Will and in 1745 was sole executor of his father, Timothy’s Will.

In 1755 we know he took on an apprentice Nathanial Frankard at Warminster.

John Bodman died in 1757 and was buried at Warminster on the 14th November 1757. He left a Will – see below and this mentions estates in Seend, Warminster and Froome, Somerset.

His wife Mary was buried two years later in 1759 an d was buried on 3rd September. She was aged 48 and left a Will – see below

I John Bodman of Warminster in the County of Wilts Linen Draper do hereby revoke and make void all former and other Will and Wills Testament and Testaments by me at any time heretofore made and do declare this to be my only last Will and Testament as follows (that is to say)
first I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Anne Bodman the Sum of fifteen hundred Pounds at her Age of One and twenty Years And my Will is that my said Daughter Anne shall have a sufficient Maintenance and Education allowed and Paid her out of my Personal Estate by my Executrix hereinafter named until she attains to the Age of One and twenty Years
Also I give devise and bequeath unto my said Daughter Anne Bodman her Heirs and Assigns for ever All that my ffreehold Estate in Warminster aforesaid lately called Potticarys
Also I give to my Mother Mary Bodman ten Pounds a Year during her natural Life Also I give to my Brother Lypert Bodman the Sum of three hundred Pounds to be paid at the End of twelve Calendar Months Next after my Decease
Also I give to my Uncle Thomas Braine my Aunt Elizabeth Braine my Sister in Law Anne Braine my Sister in Law Elizabeth Smith Mrs Mary Braine Widow my Cousin Elizabeth Bodman and my Cousin Mary Collins five Pounds each to buy them Mourning
Also I give and bequeath unto my loving Wife Mary Bodman all my leasehold Estates in Frome and Seend and elsewhere during my Terms and Estates to come therein all the Rest Residue and Remainder of my Moneys Goods Chattels and Effects and all other my real and Personal Estate whatsoever and wheresoever I Give devise and bequeath the same to my said Wife Mary Bodman whom I make nominate and appoint sole and only Executrix of this my last Will and Testament
And I do hereby further nominate and appoint my Brother Lypert Bodman and my Nephew William Bodman my Brother in Law Thomas Barnes and John Shoare of Warminster aforesaid Grocer Trustees and Overseers of this my said Will desiring them to see the same be duly performed in all Respects And I do give to each of them for their Trouble thereabouts ten Pounds In Witness whereof I the said John Bodman have hereunto set my Hand and Seal this ninth day of November in the Year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and fifty seven

I Mary Bodman of Warminster in the County of Wilts Widow do hereby revoke and make Void all former and other Will and Wills Testament and Testaments by me at any time heretofore made And do Declare this to be my only last Will and Testament as follows (that is to say)
First I Give unto my Cozen Anne Beal Daughter of my Uncle Joseph Beal the Sum of Ten pounds a Year during her Natural life to be paid by my Executrix hereinafter mentioned by half Yearly Payments Also all the Rest Residue and Remainder of my Moneys Goods Chattles and Effects and all other my Real and Personal Estate whatsoever and wheresoever
I Give Devise and bequeath unto my Daughter Anne Bodman But in Case she shall happen to Dye before her Age of One and twenty Years Then and not otherwise
I Give unto my Two Sisters Elizabeth Smith and Anne Braine the Sum of One thousand Pounds each
And Lastly I do hereby make Nominate and Appoint my said Daughter Anne Bodman Sole and only Executrix of this my said last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I the said Mary Bodman have hereunto set my hand and Seal this Twenty Ninth day of August In the Year of our Lord 1759
